How much original copy should you have on your parked domains? Domain Silliness: Sailboater.net

SEO Smarty offers four things to consider when choosing a business domain name which come at the process from a somewhat different POV than a domainer:

  • Run it through Google to see if Google thinks its a misspelling
  • Decide how hard it will be to manage from a brand perspective
  • Check things it might be negatively associated with (like street slang)
  • Register singular and plural- avoid domains where you can’t get both

Domainers who buy and sell (flip) domains can learn from this. Here’s my domainer lesson from these:

  • Intentionally buying misspellings may not be a great strategy if you flip domains unless you own the correct version and all the common misspellings and sell them as a group
  • Consider the usability as a brand when you buy domains- her example (travelwiki) sounds like a great domain until you discover that wikipedia is always going to be the top result for that search term- not great from a business perspective although that is a great domain!
  • Slangy terms should be offered in a trendy context that shows that you know what they mean on the street- do your homework if you’re not up to speed on these things, then do some dev work that accentuates the hip factor
  • Buy names in sets, plural and singular and sell them as sets
