Blade Runner, as it was distributed in 1982, was a Hollywoodized version of director Ridley Scott’s original ultra-dark vision of the near future. A happy ending was tacked on and there were several sloppy scenes in which stunt work and cables could be seen. Nevertheless the film has proven to be an uncannily accurate representation of one direction we may be moving towards. In 1991 Scott released a Director’s cut that restored the original dark ending and added some scenes but the overall quality was still less than perfect.
This December a five disc set with a true final cut will be released after a brief theatrical release. Anyone developing a tech business should get themselves to theater for this event because the creativity and vision associated with this film are a trigger for breaking into new ways of thinking. I’m always fascinated with the business applications of visionary experiences- building a business these days is an unending creative act that, because of digital technology, requires constant adjustments to your worldview. A film like Blade Runner is a powerful stimulant to that creative act.
Wired has a fantastic interview with Ridley Scott that also includes various people’s (Moby, J. Craig Venter, Ray Kurzweill and more) thoughts on the film and their personal response to it.
