Global warming upon us and domainers need to do their part. Here a few suggestions for how you can be a Greener domainer:

  • Don’t buy carbon-intensive domain names like GiantCoalPoweredPowerPlant.com. Get something like RecyclableBeerMugs.com instead. There are a lot more people out there ready to buy beer mugs than stinky coal plants.
  • Build parking pages that don’t have sub-pages. Serving up lots of pages requires more power at server farms- that’s why the Goog builds theirs next to hydro-power sites. Just put a ton of ads and affiliates on one page. Mother nature will love you.
  • Only read one domaining blog- they all cover the same stories over and over again. Why spend all that time and electricity reading the same quoted stories over and over again?
  • Read a blog like this one- the background is a nice blue color that is very relaxing, saving you personal energy. Don’t read a blog like Sahar’s with its pictures of dozens of gas-guzzling Lamborghinis. You might break strategy and sell a valuable domain so you can drive one of those babies. And we know they’re not good for the planet!

That’s just a few ideas- do you know any ways we can become better members of our global green community?

The huge decline in world markets last Monday was not about recession. If this is really the case and traders have the weekend to mull it over, watch what happens Monday…imagine that a collapse in the markets turned out to not be the result of economic conditions but the impact of one stupid French trader who bypassed systemic safeguards and forced his employer to dump $70 Billion worth of bad trades as fast as they could before the market caught on. The world thinks the sky is falling, the Fed drops interest rates .75% and everyone goes berserk about recession- and maybe it was really about one bank employee in France?

That’s a global economy if I ever saw one…

From my climate change blog:

It is rare when my two fascinations, climate issues and Internet marketing, cross paths. However, according to Information Week, broadband usage is going to save the equivalent of 11% of our annual oil imports over the next decade:

” The pervasive use of broadband Internet connections and the tools and practices they enable could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by some 1 billion tons over the next decade, according to the American Consumer Institute. Widespread adoption of broadband in the United States alone would cut energy use by the equivalent of 11% of annual oil imports, the group says.”

As a telecommuter I can tell you that I’m driving far less than when I had a short seven mile commute to work. Given that average commutes in major metros are over 45 minutes each way or 40 miles a day, I can see how broadband makes a dent. Add in the huge savings as business travelers begin to use the really effective teleconferencing services that are starting to emerge and you’ll see big savings in both oil and emissions.

As gas prices rise, and public transport falls behind in its ability to serve increasing demand, alternative work arrangements will become the norm. I see things like temporary centrally-located office spaces being created for face to face meetings that are closer to home for all attendees. Hotels have served this purpose for years and will move even further into the business services sector. I live across the street from a hotel and it would be great if they provided a rental video conference suite for meetings. They may see it as a threat to their core business but it would be more than made up by selling us $7 a cup coffee and $12 croissants…

Good news for Internet businesses…
